Dr. Gould is a local Racine dentist who has years of experience with cosmetic tooth restorations like dental crowns.
A dental crown is a tooth restoration, sometimes also called a cap, that can save a fractured, broken or damaged tooth. Dr. Gould may recommend it to patients who have a deep or long crack in the tooth, or in weak teeth that have had large fillings or root canals. Any tooth that has had damage to its structure that significantly weakens it might be a candidate for a crown.
Crowns can help you save a tooth from extraction in some cases. They serve to strengthen the tooth, restore or enhance its appearance, and protect it from further damage. Each crown is a tooth-shaped covering, individually made for your mouth, and can be made from gold, ceramic, or a fused combination of porcelain and gold. The choice of material is something Dr. Gould can discuss with you, and depends on the patient.
Sometimes, they are attached to bridges or dentures to help in dental restoration procedures, and they also are used with dental implants to replace missing teeth. For instance, if you have a missing tooth that has made a gap in your smile or bite, a crown, attached to an implant, might be placed in the empty space This helps keep the other natural teeth from shifting or being damaged by unusual wear, keeps your bite balanced, your smile intact and your mouth healthy. For patients with badly shaped or heavily discolored teeth, crowns or caps can also be used to improve the cosmetic appearance of your smile.
Restoring a tooth with a crown typically takes two appointments. Dr. Gould would comfortably prepare the tooth which, depending on the problem the crown is fixing, might include placing a strong core filling and/or shaping the tooth eliminating sharp broken edges thus creating a smooth, strong understructure to support the crown. Impressions of the tooth and surrounding teeth are made; a good fitting temporary crown is fabricated and secured to the tooth to protect it until the next appointment. From the impressions of the teeth, the dental laboratory technician creates the final crown through either a ceramic milling or metal casting technique. Dr. Gould works closely with the technician to create an exquisite, well-fitting, natural-looking crown restoration.
At the second appointment the temporary crown is removed and the final crown is tried in. Dr. Gould and the patient confirm the good fit of the crown to the tooth and surrounding teeth and its desired appearance. It is then carefully secured to the tooth with a strong adhesive. The newly restored tooth is strong and esthetic and will give the patient long-lasting confidence when chewing and smiling.
Slight swelling and discomfort may be experienced following the procedure and is a normal part of your body healing the affected areas. Within a few days, any sensitivity in the area should subside.
Your new crown should look, feel and function like a natural tooth. To protect it, as well as your natural teeth, from damage, avoid chewing hard foods, like ice or hard candy. As a tooth restored with a crown is not immune to cavities or gum disease, regular preventative care, both at home (with the brush and floss) and in the dental office, is critical to long-term dental health and your smile!
